How Far Ahead Should You Book Machu Picchu? Foreigners, Peruvians and Cusco Residents

There is no separate mandatory booking deadline for foreign visitors, Peruvians and Cusco residents. What matters is whether your preferred route, date and entry time still have tickets. Eligibility and proof of identity may differ.

Quick answer: as a planning guideline, aim to secure your Machu Picchu ticket 2–4 months ahead when your date is fixed or demand is high. If you can change dates or routes, start checking 4–8 weeks ahead. These are editorial recommendations, not official deadlines or availability guarantees. Living in Cusco does not remove the need for a ticket.

Booking lead times by visitor type

For groups and fixed dates, check capacity earlier.
Editorial guidance reviewed October 19, 2026. Check live availability on the official platform.
VisitorWhen to startWhat to check
International visitor2–4 months for a fixed date or must-have route; 4–8 weeks if flexible.Accepted ID, applicable fare, circuit, train and entry time.
Peruvian visitor from another regionUse the same planning ranges; a DNI does not reserve capacity.DNI, fare category and availability for the chosen route.
Born in or resident in CuscoFor the Sunday local benefit, obtain your ticket as soon as you choose the Sunday. For other days, use the general guidance.Eligibility, proof, issued ticket and Sunday capacity.

Start even earlier for a group, a fixed train connection or a particularly popular circuit. Peru's Ministry of Culture sets capacity by date and circuit for 2026. No planning range replaces a live ticket search.

If you are visiting from abroad

First check that the entrance ticket you actually want is available; then coordinate trains, hotels and other services around it. An international flight does not secure an entry time or a place on the classic circuit. Use the identity document you intend to take on the trip. The official TuBoleto guide asks for identity details, email, circuit, route, date, time and origin. Foreign residents in Peru and citizens of Andean Community countries may qualify for promotional fares when they meet the relevant requirements; check the current fare resolution.

If you are Peruvian and live outside Cusco

You may have fewer international travel arrangements, but the entry capacity for your route and time remains limited. A national fare is not an automatic reservation. Enter your DNI information accurately and carry the same document. For public holidays or inflexible dates, use the longer planning range in the table.

If you were born in or live in Cusco

In 2026 the Peruvian government confirmed free Sunday admission for eligible local residents under the applicable rules. Free is not the same as walking in without a reservation: check how to prove eligibility and obtain the appropriate ticket on the official platform. Daily capacity still applies. The local Sunday benefit does not extend automatically to every Peruvian visitor.

What if only a few days remain?

Train on the route toward Machupicchu Pueblo in Peru
Your entrance ticket and train journey need to work together.
  1. Check TuBoleto for available dates, circuits and entry times. Consider another route or date if your first choice is sold out.
  2. Check that your ticket and train times work together before paying for non-refundable transport or accommodation.
  3. There is limited in-person ticket sales in Machupicchu Pueblo for entry the following day. The official site says purchases must be made in person and are subject to availability. Do not rely on this to obtain a specific route.

In September 2026, the Ministry of Culture began testing direct ticket sales with confirmed payment. Starting checkout is not the same as receiving an issued ticket; verify final confirmation and current platform rules.

Planning a visit next year?

You can outline your itinerary before that year's ticket calendar opens, but do not assume a fixed release date. Sales for 2026 started in November 2025; the next calendar should be checked against a new official announcement. A third-party offer made before tickets are released is not an issued entrance ticket.

A practical booking order

Choose the circuit first so the ticket matches the experience you want.
  1. Decide which experience you want. Circuits are not interchangeable; see our circuit guide.
  2. Check official capacity for your date and time, and select a fare you can document.
  3. Complete payment and save the issued ticket. Confirm name, ID, route and entry time.
  4. Only then coordinate train, bus, hotel and guide. For local assistance, explore our Classic Machu Picchu tour and check what is included before booking.

Bottom line: book as soon as you can when your date cannot move. Your passport, DNI or Cusco residency can change fare eligibility, not restore sold-out capacity.
