Day 3: From the Coast to the Andes: Flights from Lima to Cusco

After enjoying the Peruvian coast, it's now time to explore Cusco. We'll get ready early for breakfast, and later our transportation will transfer you from your hotel to the Lima airport. It's very important to be at the airport three hours early. After a 1-hour-and-25-minute flight, we'll land at the Alejandro Velasco Astete - Cusco Airport. Welcome to the historic capital of Peru! You've arrived in the historic capital of the Inca Empire, a place full of culture, traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. Along the way, they will give you tips and advice on how to deal with altitude sickness. This afternoon will be free for you to acclimatize and rest. Later, we recommend visiting the Qosqo Native Art Center to observe the typical dances of Cusco.

Day 4: Getting to Know Cusco: City Tour + Abode of the Gods.

Our activity begins with pickup from your accommodation for our first stop, Coricancha. This temple was the most important religious and astronomical center of the Tawantinsuyu. Its walls were covered in gold leaf in honor of the god Inti (the Sun). With the arrival of the Spanish, the Convent of Santo Domingo was built over its structure, but the impressive Inca foundations can still be seen, demonstrating the Inca's architectural mastery. Continuing the tour, we will visit Sacsayhuamán, the most impressive constructions of the Inca Empire, located in Cusco, Peru. It is believed that its construction began during the reign of Pachacútec in the 15th century and was completed by his successors. The architecture of this place is unique and enigmatic, with a great deal of mystery. Near this place, we will visit the Qenco archaeological site with its eucalyptus forest, where we will have a short photo session. Finally, we'll visit the abode of the gods. This place is a place of connection with Andean culture, surrounded by nature and with impressive views. It's ideal for photo sessions and to learn more about the Inca worldview. Its underground passages are unique, and its theme is clearly based on Andean gods.

Day 5: Tour to Moray + Salt Mines + Chinchero

Early, around 8 a.m., we'll begin our adventure to the salt mines, as they are empty at this time. This allows us to enjoy the place and take the desired photos. Later, we'll head to Moray, an Inca agricultural laboratory. These two sites date back to the Inca period and were very important, one for obtaining salt and the other for obtaining improved seeds for agriculture. Later, we continue our program to visit the artisan textile factories where alpa and vicuña wool is processed into very fine garments, preserving traditional Inca textiles, adding color with natural elements that create a truly magical place in nature. In the afternoon, we will return to Cusco to rest in our hotel room.

Day 6: Visiting the Best of Cusco

This day, we will pick up your hotel at 8:00 a.m. to enter the Sacred Valley of the Incas. En route, we will have an optional stop (Cochahuasi), a sanctuary for rescued animals. Here, you can observe Andean condors, which is the highlight. Continuing the tour, we will stop at the Taray viewpoint to contemplate the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here we will tour this Inca archaeological site, visit the terraces, water fountains, the Inca cemetery of Taucanamarca, and climb to the highest viewpoint at 3,580 meters above sea level. Later, we will return to the town of Pisac, where we will visit the silversmith workshops and later head to Urubamba for our traditional buffet lunch. Finally, we will visit Ollantaytambo, an archaeological site steeped in mystery due to its architecture and the use of pink granite, unique to this area. Here, we will conclude the day's activities. We will drop you off at your hotel in Ollantaytambo so you can later visit the plaza and admire the picturesque streets of this town.

Day 7: Fulfilling your dreams: Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the world

The long-awaited moment has finally arrived. We wake up early, have breakfast at the hotel, and head straight to the train station to begin our adventure on a picturesque train with breathtaking views of valleys, mountains, and magical sites en route to Machu Picchu Town. Here, our guide will wait for you at the train station to escort you from there to the buses. After 30 minutes aboard the transport that will finally take us to Machu Picchu, we will disembark and finally arrive at the entrance to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. You will have a private guided tour where you can discover the mysteries that this special place in the world holds, recharge your batteries, and visit viewpoints, temples, and the most important sites depending on the route you choose. After marveling at the beauty of this imposing human creation, we'll descend to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo to enjoy free time, have lunch (not included), and rest before boarding the return train. At the scheduled time, we'll take the return train to Ollantaytambo and then travel to Cusco in our private transportation. We'll arrive in the afternoon to enjoy our hotel stay in Cusco.

Day 8: Humantay Lagoon Tour - A Natural Paradise in the Andes

We embark on an unforgettable adventure to Humantay Lagoon, a hidden gem in the Andes. This tour will take you to discover the turquoise waters of this impressive lagoon, surrounded by towering mountains and dreamy landscapes. Very early, around 4:30 am, we will pick you up from your hotel and head for almost 2 hours to Mollepata to enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast. Then, we will continue for another hour to our starting point. Once ready to begin our hike, our transportation will drop you off at an altitude of approximately 3,900 meters above sea level (12,800 feet). Here, we will begin the ascent to Humantay Lagoon, located at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters (13,800 feet). It takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the highest point. It is a moderately difficult hike, but we assure you it will be completely worth it because upon arrival, you will discover the true treasure hidden in the mountains. If the trail becomes too difficult, you have the option of renting a horse to ascend to the lagoon (not included). After some free time, we will begin our descent for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. On the way down, the hike will be less intense, and we'll be more than satisfied with having witnessed the beautiful turquoise waters of this enchanting lagoon. In Soraypampa, we'll take the return shuttle to Mollepata, where we'll enjoy a delicious lunch to recharge our batteries and rest our legs. En route, we can visit an artisanal ice cream shop that will leave you feeling truly satisfied (optional). At the end, we'll return to Cusco in our private transportation, following the same route as in the morning. Our tour will conclude around 6:00 pm after being dropped off at your hotel.

Day 9: Tour to the colorful mountains with their majestic glaciers // Rainbow Mountain Tour - Vinicunca

An exciting day awaits us, filled with landscapes, rivers, and colorful mountains, where we will observe alpacas and llamas in their natural habitat and meet local people who live in the mountains. Once in Cusipata, we will enjoy a delicious and energizing breakfast before continuing by car to Llacto, the starting point of our hike. After a 1-hour ride in our private transportation, we will descend to almost 4,600 meters above sea level. Before starting, our team will provide recommendations for our tour and provide you with walking sticks to use during the hike. From here to the viewpoint, we will enjoy the presence of alpacas, llamas, wildlife, local people, and, above all, the impressive distant view of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. For the classic photo, you must ascend to 5,036 meters (16,466 feet). The beauty of this place is unique, with its colorful mountains, due to the different minerals found in its soil. At this point, we will stand atop the world's seven-color mountain. This will be a unique moment where we will have time to meditate and connect with nature, feel our heartbeat, and feel alive. Many say it resembles a scene from another planet, never seen before. Don't worry about time; you will have plenty of space to take photographs and enjoy the peace at the top of the mountain. Finally, in the afternoon, we will return to the starting point and enjoy a buffet lunch in the village to recharge our batteries. Once we're done, satisfied, and with our hearts full of having experienced the best of Cusco, we'll head back to your hotel, arriving at approximately 5:00 pm.

We begin the day exploring two of Puno's most fascinating destinations: the Uros Floating Islands and the Sillustani archaeological complex.
Uros Floating Islands Tour
We will board a boat to sail across Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Our first stop will be the Uros Floating Islands, a group of artificial islands made of totora reeds, where its inhabitants maintain ancient traditions. We will learn about their lifestyle, their relationship with the lake, and their unique construction method.
Return to Puno and lunch
After visiting the Uros, we will return to the mainland to enjoy lunch in Puno.
Sillustani Tour
In the afternoon, we'll head to Sillustani, an impressive archaeological complex located on the shores of Laguna Umayo. This site is famous for its chullpas, enormous funerary towers built by the Colla culture and later used by the Incas. These stone structures, which can reach up to 12 meters in height, were used to house the remains of the nobility.
Free afternoon in Puno
Upon returning to Puno, you'll have the afternoon free to stroll through the city, explore its markets, visit the Plaza de Armas, or simply relax on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Day 12: Arequipa City Tour

Our trip begins with a spectacular view of the city from the Carmen Alto and Yanahuara viewpoints, two iconic locations from which we'll contemplate the majesty of the Arequipa landscape, with its imposing volcanoes—Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu—framing the "White City." Then, we'll delve into the history and mysticism of the Monastery of Santa Catalina, an impressive architectural complex that will transport us back in time. This monastery, with more than 400 years of history, resembles a small city within a city, with cobblestone streets, colorful courtyards, austere cells adorned with small flowers, and a unique atmosphere of tranquility. We'll continue our tour through Arequipa's historic center, a true testament to more than four centuries of architecture, where white ashlar stone gleams under the Andean sun. We'll visit the Plaza de Armas, considered one of Peru's most beautiful squares, surrounded by elegant arches and overlooked by the imposing Arequipa Cathedral. A few steps away, we'll visit the Church of the Society of Jesus, a 17th-century gem with an impressive ashlar-carved façade and majestic cloisters. Its interior will amaze us with its fascinating mestizo art, reflected in the gilded altarpieces and murals of the famous, vibrantly colored Chapel of San Ignacio. Finally, we'll explore the historic Casona Tristán del Pozo, one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Arequipa. Its imposing ashlar-carved façade and elegant courtyards will transport us to another era, allowing us to appreciate the richness of the colonial legacy. This tour is an immersion in the history, culture, and beauty of Arequipa, ideal for those who wish to fully understand the essence of the White City.

Day 13: Colca Full Day

We depart early from Arequipa for Chivay, enjoying the Andean landscape. After a traditional breakfast, we head to the Cruz del Cóndor, where we'll admire the Colca Canyon and, with luck, see the majestic flight of the Andean condor. Afterward, we enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath, followed by lunch in Chivay. We arrive in Arequipa at 5:00 PM, concluding an unforgettable day.

Day 14: Nazca Lines Overflight and Ica Tour 3:00 AM to 10:00 PM

This full-day tour will take us to discover two of the most fascinating destinations in southern Peru. We depart early from Lima for Nazca, where we will board a small plane to fly over the enigmatic Nazca Lines. These impressive geometric figures of animals and plants were drawn more than a thousand years ago in the desert, and their purpose remains a mystery to this day. Some studies suggest that they were part of an astronomical calendar, a theory championed by researcher María Reiche, who dedicated her life to the study of these geoglyphs. Then, we continue to the city of Ica, famous for its warm climate and winemaking tradition. Here we'll visit the impressive Huacachina Oasis, a dreamlike place surrounded by towering dunes. For adrenaline lovers, we'll have an exciting experience zipping through the desert at high speed, with the option of sandboarding on the highest dunes. After a day filled with history, mystery, and adventure, we'll return to Lima, enjoying the last landscapes of the Peruvian desert.

Physical Challenge:

The hike to Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lagoon involves a steep path and a very early start. Prepare for a moderate physical challenge. Follow your guide's advice on what foods are suitable and what foods are not. You can train in your hometown with a few short hikes at least two days a week.

Hiking and Exploring:

A full-day excursion involves a lot of walking and exploring; wear comfortable clothing, hats, and comfortable shoes, and enjoy a full-day adventure.

Packing Guide:

The clothing and equipment you'll need depends on the tour and the time of year you travel. In general, we recommend packing light, comfortable clothing for the day, a jacket or sweater for cool evenings, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle.

Documentation:

Passport and visa. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned departure date. Citizens of many countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, and most of Europe, do not need a visa for tourist visits to Peru for up to 90 days. Travel insurance. Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and any high-altitude trekking activities. It is not mandatory for this trip, but we STRONGLY recommend having one in case you need it. Please carefully review the expiration date and restrictions.

Vaccinations:

Consult with your healthcare provider about recommended vaccinations before traveling to Peru, especially to high-altitude regions or the jungle, where they recommend getting the yellow fever vaccine.

Health Care

Altitude Concerns: Some parts of the itinerary exceed altitudes that can be risky. Take precautions and watch for symptoms of altitude sickness; it is recommended to seek medical advice beforehand, especially if you have pre-existing conditions, heart problems, or are overweight. Be aware of changes in altitude, especially during high-altitude hikes and stays; follow the instructions provided regarding altitude sickness. If you feel it is really severe, you can ask your doctor for some pills or simply drink coca tea; it always helps! Health precautions: Follow your guide's recommendations and let us know if you have any heart problems or if you ever experience cardiac arrest. It is very important to report it so that appropriate precautions can be taken. Bring all necessary medications (consult your primary care physician), insect repellent, and a basic first aid kit.

Physical Preparation:

Some activities require physical fitness; make sure you are adequately prepared for hikes, walks, and adventure activities. Don't forget to hike before traveling to Peru; this will help you be better prepared.

Family-friendly:

This tour offers various family-friendly activities. And for some activities involving higher altitude and physical demands, it's very important to know your limits and not push yourself too hard. The Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lagoon activities are the most challenging. If you have difficulty walking, you can consider other alternatives, such as renting horses, to get to the sites.

Appropriate Ages:

Many parts of the itinerary are family-friendly and welcome children of all ages. However, some activities, such as the Rainbow Mountain hike, involve moderate physical activity and may be more suitable for older children or those comfortable hiking. As an option on the mountain, horses can be rented to assist with the hike.

Food and Drink

Peruvian Dishes: Peru is famous for its varied and flavorful cuisine. Be sure to try seafood dishes like ceviche (raw fish marinated in lemon juice), lomo saltado (sautéed beef), and causa limeña (mashed potatoes). Try local dishes like chiri uchú, the signature dish of Cusco cuisine. If you like eating food at street/fast food stalls, or on the go, make sure they are always safe and hygienic, as a bad decision could ruin your trip.
Pisco Sour: A popular Peruvian cocktail made with pisco (grape brandy), lemon juice, simple syrup, egg white, and bitters. It's a must-try drink that perfectly reflects Peru's culinary culture.
Altitude and Diet:At higher altitudes, you may be offered lighter meals, such as chicken soup, for the first few days. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially at higher altitudes.
Vegetarian/Vegan Options:While Peruvian cuisine is primarily meat and seafood-based, many places offer vegetarian and vegan dishes. Inform your guides or restaurants in advance of any dietary restrictions or food allergies, and they will often accommodate your needs.

Culture:

Handicrafts:Each place has its own unique flavor. Remember to bring cash, preferably in Peruvian soles, to buy souvenirs. Many places now accept cards, but cash is the most effective method of payment in places where you won't have signal.
Machu Picchu “classic view”: At Machu Picchu, we must keep in mind that in Peru we have two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. Machu Picchu is located at the edge of the jungle at 2,500 meters above sea level. This can sometimes make it appear cloudy in the mornings, or during the rainy season it could be covered in fog, but this rarely happens.
Tipping culture:Tipping rules in Peru for tour guides, drivers, and other service providers are not fixed. We always recommend giving a personal acknowledgment, but it is not mandatory; it depends on your willingness and satisfaction with them.

Climate:

Climate Variation:The climate can vary by region; be sure to bring appropriate clothing for different climates, especially for different altitudes, such as the Rainbow Mountains or the winter months of May, June, and July, which are the coldest in our region.
Seasons in Cusco:Cusco has two specific seasons: the rainy season (November to March) and the dry season (April to October). The dry season, during the months of June, July, and August, is the coldest.

Communication

Language:In Peru, the official languages are Spanish and Quechua, but in tourist destinations like Cusco, many people speak English because of their tourism jobs.
Connectivity:In cities like Lima and Cusco, you'll find good internet connectivity. However, in more remote areas, such as the Andes or while hiking, you should keep in mind that you won't be connected to Wi-Fi or the internet. Expect limited or no internet access on some routes, such as Rainbow Mountain.
